ok, have a running argument with a friend. do all standard breds have to be both tattoed and freezebranded in order to be registered? sounds simple but most standardbreds are born to race and to race they have to be at least tattoed but are both required, or what if you want to breed standardbreds for other purposes, do you have to tattoo/freezebrand? this is purely a hypothetical question, no-one is breeding anything but the usta rulebook is vague its says tattoo or freezebrand but are both nessacary? it also says nothing about id'ing to register but requires a dna test which is done by the tattooer. so im confused..any help?
Answers:
This is what you need to register a foal:
A completed registration application- please be sure to provide the color, sex, and complete foaling date. The application also includes a section to provide the markings for the foal. Please be sure the drawn markings match the written description. The application must be signed by the recorded owner of the dam at the time of foaling, authorized agent, or current lessee of the dam.
A signed mating certificate
What does the registration fee include?
It includes registration of your horse, DNA typing, and freeze branding or tattooing.
When will my foal need to be DNA typed?
The foal will need to be DNA typed before it races or produces a foal. DNA typing is not a registration requirement. Please keep in mind that testing typically takes 5-10 business days once the lab receives a sample. The USTA encourages you to get the foal DNA typed and freeze branded/tattooed as soon as possible.
How do I get my foal freeze branded/tattooed?
Please contact the ID Technician that serves your area. They will come prepared to freeze brand or tattoo your horse. They will also be collecting a DNA sample for parentage verification. Beginning with foals born in 2001 and later the DNA sample is collected when the foal is marked. Owners no longer have to mess with waiting for the kit to arrive, collecting the sample, and mailing it to the DNA lab. The ID Technician will take care of all that for you!
In short, you pay for the DNA typing, freeze branding or tattooing (you can pick either branding or tattooing) anyway when you register the horse. And the fees are expensive compared to most associations. (Not a bad idea). It does not say that you have to do any of this to get your papers, but in order to be able to race, or have future foals registered, it is required. And since you have already paid for it, why not?
Most horse registries are now using DNA to confirm parentage. I believe that all Standardbreds have to be tattooed (like the Thoroughbreds), and the reason the tattooer would need to submit the DNA is cos most likely that is the person registering the horse, and most likely the breeder as well.
I don't know about the FB/Tattoo debate. I know at a rescue I am familiar with that all of the standardbreds that come in have lip-tattoos, most of the time they are unreadable, but they are there. Not all come in with freezebrands. Maybe only the ones that are raced get freezebrands?
I know that Saddlebred trainers buy a lot of off track Standardbreds for our Roadster to Bike and Roadster Under Saddle classes, I have never seen one with a freeze brand, but I know every single one of them has a tattoo. So maybe the freeze brand thing is just a personal preference?
Check with the standardbred association, or call the registry and ask them, I'm sure they'd have your answer!
